Botox Training for Nurses

Botox training is available for Nurses in the UK who are looking to learn about Botox injections.

Any Registered Nurse in the UK is eligible to attend a British based Botox training course and there is a wide variety of training for Botox available across the UK (the most popular location being in London). With a variety of advanced, intermediate and foundation or beginner Botox training courses available please ensure you choose the right Botox training course to suit your current skill level.

Currently only those nurses who are Independent Nurse Prescribers (INP) can prescribe Botox as it is a prescription only medicine (POM) here in the UK. Other registered nurses wishing to administer Botox must do so following assessment of the patient by a prescriber such as a Doctor, Dentist or INP who can then issue a prescription individually for that patient.

More unscrupulous nurses have been known to inject Botox without the prior patient assessment and prescription from a prescriber; however those who do so risk their registration as this is in direct violation of the guidance of their governing body the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council). Those nurses obtaining a prescription following a remote consultation of the patient by a prescriber, i.e. the prescriber is not sat face-to-face with the patient also risk investigation by the NMC for this practice.

This means that legally any registered nurse can perform an botulinum toxin injection as long as they are directed to do so by an independent nurse prescriber, doctor or dentist before it is administered. They are therefore considered to be allowed to receive training for Botox injections and eligible to attend dedicated Botox courses.

Botulinum toxin training courses are a mixture of theory and hands-on practical training and will discuss side effects. They typically concentrate on Botulinum Toxin Type A training using brands such as Botox® (Vistabel®) by Allergan, Dysport® (Azzalure®) from Ipsen/Galderma and Xeomin® (Bocouture®) by Merz Aesthetics.

Botox courses are mainly focussed on Botox as an aesthetic injectable and therefore botox training is usually centred on its cosmetic uses; however there are a number of training courses that will discuss the use of Botox and botulinum toxins in the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and how it can be used to treat migraines.
